Scalpel is the University of Manchester's Surgical Society. We hold events throughout the year for medical students, aimed at raising the awareness of different surgical specialties and career pathways, as well as providing opportunities to learn surgical skills.
How do I join Scalpel? Membership is currently only £5 and this lasts for your entire time at Manchester. The easiest way to join is talk to one of the committee members before any of our lectures. The other way of joining is to contact the rep for your year or base hospital, to see who yours is, take a look at the committee page. What are the benefits of joining? Being a member of Scalpel entitles you to free entry at the Scalpel lectures and also allows you to apply for places on our skills courses.

NEWS: Scalpel Essay Prize
The Scalpel Essay Prize for 2009 has been announced. The title is 'Surgical Training Today and Surgical Training in the Future'. It is open to all members and the top entries will appear on the British Journal of Surgery's website, and the overall winner will receive a year's subscription to the British Journal of Surgery.
